I can’t lie. Last winter, my skin was busted. During this time of year, your skin barrier gets compromised by cold air, dry indoor heating, and long, hot showers, and that can make your skin tight, irritated, and even interfere with your sleep if you’re uncomfortable or itchy. This winter night shower routine is designed to restore and nurture your skin, calm your nervous system, and prepare your whole body for rest and hydration all winter.

1. Dry Brushing & Lymphatic Stimulation (Pre-Shower)
Your routine starts before you hop in the shower by dry brushing your body with a natural-bristle body brush. I like the brushes with a handle, like this one from Ulta, because it’s easier to get your back. Don’t forget your back!
Use gentle, upward strokes toward your heart – this boosts circulation, helps with lymphatic drainage, and gently buffs away dead skin. This little ritual wakes your body up in a soft way, and primes your skin for better absorption of the hydrating products you’ll be using.

Dry brushing is one of the most effective ways to remove surface dead skin, brighten the body, and help oils or butters soak in better.

2. Warm Shower, Not Hot
When you get in the shower, make sure the water is warm, not burning hot. Take the temperature off hell babe. Dermatologists warn that very hot water can strip away your skin’s natural oils, which is especially problematic in winter.
3. Gentle, Moisturizing Cleanser or Shower Oil
Use a hydrating cleanser to clean without stripping. In the colder months, a shower oil can be especially luxurious. It helps your skin feel nourished even as it cleanses.

The L’Occitane Shower Oil lives up to the hype. The almond and grapeseed oils leave the skin soft and nourished.

4. Exfoliate (2–3x a Week)
After cleansing, exfoliate the body, but be mindful that your skin is more sensitive during the winter. Use a gentle physical or chemical exfoliant. Don’t go overboard, especially if you aren’t going to lather yourself in moisturizing products later.

The Necessaire Body Exfoliator has double exfoliating action with a chemical and physical exfoliant. It has a blend of AHA/BHA: glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid. These help remove dead skin cells and soften skin without irritation.
5. In-Shower Hydration (Optional)
You can follow up exfoliation (or skip on non-exfoliation days) with a second round of very light, hydrating rinse. Like using your shower oil again on damp skin, or just a gentle, moisturizing body wash. This helps leave a protective film on your skin, minimizing the drying effect of the water.
6. Rinse With Cool(er) Water
As you finish, gradually turn down the water temperature to lukewarm/cool for the last 30 seconds. This helps close your pores and locks in the benefits of your exfoliation and hydrating cleansers/oils.
7. Pat Dry
When you step out, gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing, because friction can irritate your skin and disrupt your barrier. Leaving your skin slightly damp helps retain moisture. Air drying is also option, as long as you do it outside of the steamy bathroom.

8. Moisturize Immediately
Right after patting dry, while your skin is still slightly damp, apply a rich, emollient moisturizer to lock in hydration. Go for creams or butters with ingredients like ceramides, shea butter, or sea-inspired lipids to really restore your barrier.

9. Set the Vibe for Sleep
After your winter night shower routine:
- Use a humidifier in your bedroom to replenish moisture in the air (winter air + heater = super dry).
- Keep your bedroom cool, calm, and cozy. Soft pajamas, a warm blanket, maybe a lavender mist or candle.
